Mobile line and data plans:
Even for a short trip in Batam, having a local prepaid mobile line will always be an advantage such as :
- Calling back home country with cheap IDD call rates (depending on which telecom company)
- Cheap data plans – I will also recommend on a below post
- If you are travelling in big groups and intent to go separate ways for awhile, being contactable is the key for early reunion later.
- Cut down those nonsense unwanted roaming charges.
if those who want to remain contactable from your home country lines or either those roaming charges are insignificant to you, then by all means, keep it your way.
Indonesia have more then 5 mobile network operators,
but i am going to reviews only few of them and elaborate more on one particular operator that I felt is best in terms of package.
The big 5 mobile network operators in Batam will be :

Telkomsel - Have 3 kind of pre-paid cards : Kartu Halo, SimPATI and Kartu As
- Probably have the best coverage in Batam.
- Check balance by *888# and Data balance by *889#
XL Axiata- 2nd largest operator
- Check balance and Data info by *123#
Indosat- Have 2 kind of Pre-Paid Card : IM3 and Mentari
- 3rd largest Operator
- Check balance by *388#
- Check data balance : SMS "usage" send to 363
- Check balance info by *888#
- Best Data package in local, probably one of the cheapest in Asia
- 1MB cost IDR20 = SGD0.002
- Check Balance by *111*1#
- Check data by *111*3*2*1# and await SMS for info.
